Outdoor Explorers - discovering play in the outdoor environment

Playing outdoors in nature has many well documented benefits for children under age 4. Nature is such a fantastic learning environment with natural sensory materials - leaves, trees, bark, wind, water, branches, sticks, pebbles all make great play materials for building and making things. It is also a great way of developing childrens imagination and creativity - sticks quickly become fairy houses or dens, pebbles can be characters and there is no limitations in the outdoor environment. There are health benefits too - children are able to move about, use up energy and big body movements, develop balance, coordination and gross and fine motor skills.

Our OUTDOOR EXPLORERS programme aims to tap in to exactly this - it runs once per month in our woodland garden in Poleglass or a local park, and the activities are all based around outdoor learning and using natural sensory materials - we do water play, ice activities, den building, digging and planting, balancing and building and much more!
